The NFL «Super Bowl»

The Super Bowl is the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL). It is played between the champions of the NFL’s two conferences, the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). The game is held on the first Sunday in February and is considered the culmination of the NFL season. The Super Bowl is one of the most-watched television events in the United States and has become a major cultural event, with popular musicians performing at halftime and many companies debuting new commercials during the broadcast. The winning team receives the Vince Lombardi Trophy, named after the coach of the Green Bay Packers, who won the first two Super Bowls. The location of the Super Bowl is determined by the NFL well in advance, usually three to five years before the game.

Super Bowl Halftime Show

The Super Bowl halftime show is a high-profile entertainment event held during the halftime of the Super Bowl, the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL). The halftime show has become an American cultural phenomenon and one of the most-watched television events of the year. The halftime show is known for featuring popular music acts, with many performers treating it as a career milestone.

The first Super Bowl halftime show was relatively low-key, featuring marching bands and drill teams. However, as the game grew in popularity, the halftime show evolved to feature more elaborate and expensive productions. Over the years, various famous artists like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, Maroon 5, among others have performed in the halftime show.

However, not all halftime shows have been well-received. Some have been criticized for being too low-energy, while others have been criticized for being too risqué or controversial. In recent years, the NFL has faced criticism and calls to change the halftime show format, with some calling for it to feature more diverse performers and to move away from the traditional focus on pop and rock music.

Halftime Show Scandals

There have been a few scandals related to the Super Bowl halftime show over the years, many of them related to controversial or inappropriate performances.

One of the most notable was the halftime show in 2004, when Janet Jackson had a “wardrobe malfunction” during her performance with Justin Timberlake, exposing her breast on national television. The incident sparked widespread controversy and led to stricter broadcast regulations.

In 2012, M.I.A. flipped the bird during her performance with Madonna, Nicki Minaj, and Cee Lo Green. The NFL was criticized for not doing enough to censor the performance and later filed a lawsuit against the singer for her actions.

In 2016, Beyoncé’s performance was criticized by some for its political overtones, particularly the references to the Black Lives Matter movement.

In 2020, the NFL faced backlash for not having enough diversity in the halftime show performers, with some calling for the league to feature more artists of color.

In 2021, the halftime show faced criticism over the NFL’s treatment of Colin Kaepernick, the former quarterback who kneeled during the national anthem in protest of racial injustice and police brutality.

Super Bowl scandals

There have been a few scandals in the history of the NFL Super Bowl. One of the most notable was the “Spygate” scandal in 2007, when the New England Patriots were found to have illegally videotaped the defensive signals of the New York Jets during a regular-season game. The team was fined and docked a first-round draft pick as a result. Another scandal was the “Deflategate” scandal in 2015, where the New England Patriots were accused of intentionally deflating footballs used in the AFC Championship game. This led to quarterback Tom Brady being suspended for four games and the team being fined $1 million and losing two draft picks. In 2017, the Atlanta Falcons lost the Super Bowl LI in a comeback by the Patriots, however, during the game there was a power outage in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, the stadium where the Super Bowl was being held, this caused a 34-minute delay in the game.
